Could Big Data solve the music industry's problems?

Musicians relations with their publishers and labels have always been tumultuous and it has been alleged with the amount of middle men in the industry that it can take between 2 and 3 years to receive royalties. The launch of Kobalt Music which was founded by Willard Ahdritz has led to much more transparent and data-driven approach to the music industry. 4 companies using Big Data to address Water Scarcity

Water scarcity is an increasingly serious issue. It is estimated that by 2025, 1.8 billion people will face “absolute water scarcity”. The United Nations recognized the seriousness of this issue by including it as one of the Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to have global accessible clean water and sanitation by 2030. Although there is much to be done in order to accomplish that goal in the next thirteen years, there are many innovative efforts underway to make significant strides to that end. Here are four companies creatively employing Big Data to combat water scarcity:

Hackathons are not just for developers

By Glyn Povah, Head of Global Product Development at LUCA.

Hackathon is derived from the English words “hack” and “marathon”, and if you Google the word “hackathon” you’ll get something like the following: “Noun (informal). An event, typically lasting several days, in which a large number of people meet to engage in collaborative computer programming”.

This all conjures up images of lots of developers packed in a dark room, coding on MacBooks for 24 hours, eating lots of pizza and drinking lots of soda. My experience is somewhat different. In fact I’m not a developer at all. Well, not any more anyway. Despite that I still consider hackathons an indispensable part of the new product development process.

When Big Data meets art

In this world of ours, it is normal to feel overwhelmed by the amount of information, facts and data we encounter everyday - and the quantity we are generating every second continues to grow on an exponential basis. However, perhaps the problem isn't actually about the amount we have to digest, but rather the way in which we digest that information. Maybe we are expecting the world to follow this frenetic rhythm of data consumerism without taking into account what the human brain is actually capable of processing.

Nevertheless, we shouldn't lose hope. There are many people out there thinking about how this problem can be solved. And it is not necessarily what you might be thinking. What if we present data in a way that people really engage with it? Because, after all, let's not forget that in this cold and empirical world, emotions make it easier to establish bonds with people - and art is a key way to forget these emotional connections.

How we're mapping Climate Change with Big Data

At the 2014 U.N. Climate Change Summit in New York City, U.S. President Barak Obama shared his thoughts on the seriousness of climate change. While acknowledging other pressing issues such as terrorism and inequality, he highlighted climate change as the most significant and declared, “There’s one issue that will define the contours of this century more dramatically than any other, and that is the urgent and growing threat of a changing climate.”

The 6 data-driven pioneers of politics

Data is starting to change the way we run our world, and businesses have tended to lead the adoption and application of Big Data technology. Nevertheless, there are some areas where it has been slightly harder to start the data-driven revolution, and politics is a key example. We've seen examples of data-driven election campaigns, with Obama becoming a pioneer when he ran for Presidency in 2008, yet what we're actually referring to is the use of data to drive decision-making in governments.
